Your input for THE CHAMPION (GFL Book V)

Hello from the San Diego ComicCon! The FDØ and I are in San Diego, seeing all the of the geeky things and talking to many fun folks. We want your input on THE CHAMPION, GFL Book V, which Scott started outlining this week.

How many times in your life have you finished a series, then thought, "wow, how did they screw that up, and why didn't they ask me?" Well, Junkies, that's part of what sets us apart: we are asking you. Give us your thoughts on where the series is going, what you'd love to see happen, what plot threads are dangling, etc. Listen into the episode to find out how you can make your voice heard.

Scott says "we do this because we love you, which is also why we will kill you last."

I think Rebecca should have died in that final play...

Krakens shall and will dominate every fraggin game, including the galaxy bowl. Get another backup qb who is worse than queintin in the workaholic department. quietin's sister dies. explain why the residents of the portath cloud are isolationist douchbags. rebecca and quintin finaly get together... blah blah blah

Thank you for asking us for our input.

1.) If book five is the final book in the series, first and foremost, please make sure it doesn't end abruptly. One of the worst things an author can do in my opinion is spend 600+ pages (or 4 previous books) "setting up" for the final act and then when the final act arrives there are only 30 pages left in the book.

2.) Please include an epilogue. I want to know what Quentin is up to 10-20 years down the road...if he is still alive...

3.) Gredok the Splithead MUST BE DESTROYED. Or at least humilated and banished from the GFL....I demand retaliation on the trick he played on QB.

4.) Don't feel compelled to make Quentin the "best ever" quarterback in the history of the game. Sometimes it is more important what a man does OFF the field than what he does on the field.

5.) Crazy George Starcher and (The Quyth Warrior who is deformed, I can't remember his name) - Maybe they aren't important parts of the story, but I enjoyed their parts in The All-Pro and felt like they weren't mentioned often enough in The MVP. Something to consider...

That is all I can think of at this time. Thank you again for taking the time to read this and consider my input. Love the series!

I would like to see the John quentin thing resolved quickly in the champion...by ma tweetie....not the in ur face ...hold hands till ur friends approach...but more the way she handled quentin on his first birthday cake

NO place kicker hits EVERY kick. I think that Arioch Morningstar needs to miss a field goal from time to time. It could be because of a bad snap, and muffed hold, a blocked kick, or maybe he just misses one.

A missed game-winning kick could put Arioch in a post-game situation in the locker room which Quentin would then have to defuse, perhaps witht he help of the Tweedy brothers.

This is the GFL we are talking about. The best athletes in the country. I think it is conceivable that the place kickers can be perfect or near perfect. Plus, Morningstar doesn't really have much of a back story in this series. I think it would be strange to have him play a major part this late in the series...

Here are my three ideas for the GFL series:

  1. Virak kills Don Pine during a game. This would force Quentin to confront his unresolved relationship with Pine and make us hate Virak even more.
  2. Quentin has to get revenge on Gredok. Maybe he figures out a way to outsmart him and take ownership of the Krakens.
  3. I'd like to see Quentin use his position in the GFL to alter galactic politcs. Maybe he supports a rebellion against the Creterakians or reforms the Purist Nation.

I'm sure whatever Scott comes up will be awesome. Can't wait to listen to it!

I need more Spiderbears, they were relegated in the rookie so have a reason to blame the Krackens for comin up as they went down, plus it was established (when they came to his aid in returning with the new players) that they have the largest number of C.O.C.B players. What kinda special place waits for a defensive player that sends his own Godhead to Gridiron heaven, how does their  QB feel about the rest of the team worshiping another QB, does he pretend to share the belief to make them play better or really believe. The Spiderbears are on the path to be champions the only variable is time.        GOOOO SPIDERBEARS.

His name presently escapes me. But the backup quarterback and his reaction to Bekka being put in as QB instead of him in the Championship game. Will he forgive Quentin?

Thank you for a great series. And by the way - just started reading my copy of Nocturnal. I love your phrasings. Only just got past the place where you have Pookie cut off a Prius. Love the line about not caring for green technology etc... Thank you for making me smile.

Once we find out what Quentin does after football, we need to find out that Quentin is a distant descendant of Drew or Perry from Infected... or maybe even the Tweety brothers are a descendant of Perry.

OK, if that is too much, perhaps even Beka or some other human player…

BRING IN Chiyal "The Heretic" North, SOMEHOW. TEAM HIMUPWITH FREDERICO IF HE SURVIVES. MAKE HIM ONE OF FREDERICO'S TOP HENCHMEN. If i'm not mistaken Chyal is doing....how do i put this "hood shit" somwhere in the glaxy, he's de-modded buthes stillhuge and a trained fighter, he could definately go toe to to with space gangsters orwhatever else plus his somewhat coceyattitude could put him at odds with Quentin whohas become much more humble and leaderly in time. Doc Patah...hope i got that right, may be surprised to see him again but this is the exact type f awesome bloodcast ie in you would do SIGLERISIMO. Theres a buch of possibities here I just want this in your head.

Also there was a point where we were in the eyes of an assasinor something following quentin once he got that superstar watch status from the Kreterockians. I wanna see more about this dude.

I have a couple of directions I'd like to see this go.

  1. In book 1 or 2 - I forget now - there was an assasination attempt on Quentin by the Zoroastrian Guild - organization devoted to getting rid of Kretorakians.  It would be cool if some race/planet, perhaps led by the guild, attempted to break away from the Kretorakian Empire and the ensuing war.
  2. Listen, guy, I'd also like to second someone else's suggestion: more Danny Lundy. He was hilarious.
  3. Some backstory on the Tweedy brothers.  I think it was mentioned that their dad left early on.  It would be great if he was some famous athlete as well.  I felt that the side story with Quentin's dad was pretty great - it would be good to have a variation on the theme.
On

1. More Ma Tweedy!  It's about time she straightened Gredok out.

2. The Rebecca/Quentin love thing seems too drawn out and is getting annoying.  I like Simon's idea of killing her in a game to see where that takes the story.

Ma Tweedy, will you marry me?

  • I think Condor Adrienne needs a bigger part. The character fell by the wayside since the Pine v. Barnes Galaxy bowl was WAY more interesting. I always expected him to be a giant thorn in Quentin's side and while it WAS annoying that he recieved All-Pro honors first, that doesn't really feel satisfactory as a major rival. Maybe there needs to be a Barnes v. Adrienne Galaxy bowl? I keep feeling like there's more there to exploit.
  • What's up with Yitzak? Yeah, he's still 3rd string and mentioned here and there, but he's definitely fallen by the wayside too. I had this crazy thought that he's a Creterakian spy or something. I mean that he's helping the Creterakians find out about what Quentin is doing and how he interacts with the Sklorno, his "followers", and that's what's making them even more concerned than just the Church numbers.

DO NOT INSULT THE GODLING, QUENTIN BARNES, OR HE WILL MAKE THE APOCALYPSE DESCEND UPON YOU!
On

1) The Krakens win the Galaxy Bowl in book 5 or book 6 but not both and then win in book 7. That way Quentin has three Galaxy Bowl rings at the end of the series. Take that Donald Pine.

2) I'd like to see more interaction with players from other teams. What do they think of the Krakens and what are their own team dynamics like? Echoing Silivrensf, I want to know more about Condor Adrienne. We can tell that comparisons of the two quarterbacks bother Quentin, but he and Condor have yet to have a single conversation.

3) I want Messal to tell somebody off. He's a very pleasant and polite sentient, but he genuinely care about those around him so he could put someone in their place if they threatened his friends. I can see him giving Gredok a "The Reason You Suck" speech and Gredok would be able to do nothing about it. Messal may be the one who does everyone's grunt work, but that means he has a lot of influence. He can destroy anyone he wants because he knows everyone's secrets.

4) One of the things that really bugs me about the series is that every religion is made of straw.  If a sentient is religious, he is either a) a bigoted a-hole (Purist) b) blindly worshipping someone or something that blatantly denies being divine (Sklorno or Prawatt) or c) mentally ill (Starcher). I know that Scott isn’t that big on religion, but a more realistically built world would have a more balance presentation of these things. Can’t we just have one character who is religious without being any less likeable or reasonable than any other character?

5) Jeanine owns baby brother an apology. I read The Detective a few weeks ago and I was appalled by her plan for telling Quentin about his fake-dad. Instead of allowing the situation to be resolved before things went too far and Q got too emotionally involved (saving him loads of heartache in the process), she decided that she and Fred were going to wait several weeks and have Gredok around. She went out of her way to make the situation surrounding the reveal as bad as possible and was shocked when Q took it badly. This is unacceptable. She screwed her brother over and messed with his emotions. Quentin has a right to be angry about this and they should work through this together before starting their loving, sibling relationship. I don’t think that they technically love each other right now. Jeanine loves the toddler Quentin used to be and Q loves the idea of having any living family member whatsoever. Thus, they really need to start building an emotional core to their relationship.

6) Don't kill Mum-O. I've never seen any indications that he would be killed off, but I just wanted to be safe. Mum-O-Killowe is made of win and deserved to live to the end of the series.

7) Unlike many others, I don’t want Quentin to get revenge of Gredok. Revenge is a dark and ugly thing. I believe that Quentin is intrinsically a good person, so, like Becca, I worry a little when this kind of thing comes up. The series has been about Quentin maturing and becoming a better person, so violently taking out Gredok would be a step backward in my eyes. I can understand that the temptation would be there, but I think that forgiveness would be a far better victory because it would free Quentin both from his anger and any influence from Gredok that would indirectly manifest itself through that anger.

8) Also unlike many others, I don’t want the Creterakian Empire to get over thrown. All the Creterakians seem to do in the galaxy is a) tell the various races to not fight with one another b) collect taxes and c) run a football league. Point a is quite a good thing and other than that, most governments seemed to be allowed to make and enforce their own laws. Point b is something that all governments do and, from the brief look was get at Quentin’s taxes in book 2, the taxes don’t appear to be unreasonably high. As for point c, everyone in the galaxy likes the GFL. If that’s all the Creterakians do, I can’t for the life of me understand why so many people are in favor of rebellion.

On

Me and my friend discuss the podcasts every week over dinner on Fridays...and both of us were suspicious of Don Pine during the Galaxy Bowl. I mean, he spent years throwing games, what makes us think he wasn't up to his old tricks here as well?  So although it didn't happen in the MVP, we are expecting to have it revealed in a future book that Don may have thrown the game, making the Krakens win, and Quentin losing his pinkie, invalid and for nothing.

Also, there's got to be more with the Prawat, not the ones on the team, but the nation itself...And Crazy George and Kimberland need to have some interaction with The Old Ones or something...Bumberpuff was too quick to leave his nation, so there's got to be some sort of fall out for that beyond the people at the games protesting the Prawat's involvement...

Anyway, I love the books, Scott! Keep up the great work! (You too, A!)

Throughout pretty much the whole story the Zoroastrian Guild has been looming for me. It would be great to see them developed/revealed. Perhaps a link to Crazy George?

Bringing you Sigler-related dreams since 2011

On

I'm having a hard time writing this without freaking out over how awesome the story has been so far. I'm pretty much hooked on Siglerism like... Dammit where's Chick McGee when you need him. Well, from the depths of my GLF addled mind are my predictions:

1. Portath Cloud: My first guess is that there will be a tie in to some other bits of the siglerverse. My money is on Quentin and crew finding an a isolationist broken down old empire. Like the wasp aliens from earthcore or maybe a fragment of the Ki empire (they must have been successful with their probe/gate building idea at some point). In any case I want more spacey stuff.

2.The Quentin/John bromance falls apart, never to recover. John gets traded at the end of the next season. Uncle Johnny we will miss your witty prose. Damn you Scott for taking him away from us...

3.Quentin gets trapped in more politcs. Zoroastrians and bats vie for control over him probably forcing him to choose between Bekka and football.

4.Bekka: Scott could probably write a few books on the awkward drama there, especially when Quentin starts seeing Bekka as a woman and the Purism beast rears its ugly head. This is destined for some great high points from which the FDO will shove us off. (Into what I can only assume is some sort of sarlac like pit filled with face raping mutated spiderbears and other ki bioweapons)
