A man found beaten along a rural road Monday night has been identified as Scott Sigler, 38, of Rapid City by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation.
Sigler was listed in critical condition at Rapid City Regional Hospital Wednesday afternoon. At 9 p.m. on Wednesday a hospital official said Sigler was not listed in its directory.
A motorist found Sigler, unconscious and struggling to breathe, laying near the junction of state S.D. Highway 40 and the Spring Creek cutoff east of Hermosa at approximately 6 p.m. He was so badly beaten that those first on the scene believed he had been shot.
The severity of the beating prompted Custer County Sheriff Rick Wheeler to call in DCI to handle the investigation.
Authorities are asking anyone who may have seen something suspicious or who knows anything about the attack to contact DCI at 394-2258, ext. 119.
